Since the 10th century there have been reports of the use and export of slate stone. They are widely used raw materials for coatings and tiles.
Slates are considered to be the linchpins of modernity in the North American, European and Asian markets.
Here in Minas Gerais, the use of slate as a floor covering, walls, façades and countertops, partitions and other decorative objects is very common, but this has a raison d’être.
Brazil, through this state, already ranks second in terms of world production, consumption and export of slates, behind France, which is the world’s leading consumer and Spain as the world’s leading producer and exporter.
This prominent position was achieved in only 25 years of Minas Gerais slab sector, which accounts for 90% of this production and processes almost all Brazilian exports.
The areas of extraction and processing of slates from Minas Gerais are located in the central region of the State, at an average distance of 150 km from Belo Horizonte.
